Socket weld flange is similar to the slip-on flange in outline, but the bore is counter-bored
to accept the pipe. These flanges are typically used for smaller diameter high-pressure
piping systems such as hydraulic equipment and steam lines. The pipe is inserted into the
socket end and attached by applying a fillet weld around the hub of the flange. This allows
for a smooth bore and improved fluid or gas flow inside the pipe. An optional internal weld
may also be applied in high-stress applications.
